Common fate of Euro-Carpathian scale in the book of a Romanian writer

For the first time in decades, the Romanian author was translated into Ukrainian.  The news became the mainstream of leading cultural sites in Romania. Soon, the presentation of the book in academic and student circles will be organized by the Consul General of Romania in Chernivtsi Eleonora Moldovan.

It is a classic novel of Romanian literature "Mara" by Ioan Slavic. The book in the series "Voices of Europe" was published by the publishing house "Znannya" in 2017.

Uzhgorod.in talked with the translator of the book, Honored Journalist of Ukraine Elvira Kilaru.

– Why was this book chosen for presentation to Ukrainian readers?

– First, it is the story of a woman. A woman who, despite difficult life circumstances, finds the strength to stand up and raise two children. Next, the situation in polyethnic Transylvania in the second half of the nineteenth century is very similar to modern Transcarpathian and other areas where different ethnic groups, religions live together…

– Doesn’t time affect coexistence and understanding?

– Transylvania at the time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian empire, which affected domestic relations. However, belonging to a particular political group has no effect on interpersonal relationships.   A human must remain a human! Everything else will pass…

– What difficulties did you have during the translation?

– Undoubtedly, the main problem for me personally was literary tropes. Since untill now I have been doing translations not related to fiction, this particular aspect – to convey the atmosphere, emotion and mentality through words – was very difficult for me. In this regard, I am very grateful to the literary editor. Everything else was a real pleasure for me! I have become involved in the work that will bring Ukrainian readers the words of the Romanian classic, the national mentality, flavor and tradition of my people. Because without this paint, the picture of Europe and Ukraine as its part will not be complete!
