The President has given law enforcement bodies freedom in the fight against terrorism

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko approved amendments to the law on combating terrorism, significantly expanding the powers of the ATO forces.

The president signed the relevant law on Wednesday.

Amendments to the law provide "substantial empowerment of actors directly involved in the fight against terrorism" – the Ukrinform reported. 

As reported in the press service of the president, these changes should provide solutions to the problems of the full restoration of the rule of law and the proper functioning of public authorities to ensure safety of life and health, termination of the illegal armed groups, terrorists.

Now, ATO forces may detain and disarm people when their actions threaten the health of the hostages or anti-terrorist operation participants.

In addition, in the event, where there is a threat of terrorist attack, special units responsible for combating terrorism have the right to go to the facilities captured by terrorists and keep evidence, documents and more.

The powers of the ATO forces now include: release of hostages, prevention of terrorist acts, detention during anti-terrorist operations.
