Today in the town of Mizhhirya, at the cemetery, they consecrated the memorial plaque in memory of the fallen Hungarian soldiers buried there during the First and the Second World Wars. The monument was erected on the site of the graves at the expense of the Ministry of Defence of Hungary. The event was attended by the Head of the Public Relations and Military Memorial Department of the Ministry of Defence of Hungary Laszlo Tell, the administrator of the executive office of the Regional Council Mykhailo Popovych, the Consul General of Hungary in Uzhgorod Jozsef Bacskai and in Beregovo Ishvtan Toth, the Mizhhirya district council chairman Ivan Yarema and the head of the DSA Andriy Sheketa.
Laszlo Tell said that in Mizhhirya, they decided to honor the memory of 62 Hungarian soldiers killed during the two world wars. These soldiers died in the military hospital that was arranged in Mizhhirya during the war. Such memorials are established in Hungary and in Ukraine under the intergovernmental agreement.
The Consul General of Hungary in Uzhgorod Jozsef Bacskai told that yesterday the Hungarian delegation had visited Ivano-Frankivsk region, where in one of the villages, they also had opened the memorial plaque to soldiers killed during the Second World War.
"Relatives of the victims, that we were able to find in Hungary, thank Transcarpathians for preserving those graves. Today, with this memorial, we pay homage to the dead. This is another step to dialogue between peoples," – the diplomat said.
The administrator of the executive office of the Regional Council Mykhailo Popovych said that Transcarpathia has been and still is the exemplary region in terms of interfaith and inter-ethnic dialogue.
"Those world wars brought much grief to many nations, including the Hungarian and the Ukrainian ones. Now we have to do everything possible so that such tragedies never happen. We have to do everything to keep peace our country," – the official said.
The memorial sign was consecrated by holy priests, representatives of the three faiths.
