Open dangerous manholes. How long will we tolerate that? (PHOTOS)

The problem of open manholes is extremely relevant in Uzhgorod and not only there, but in other cities of Ukraine too. City residents by themselves help as they can: to ensure at least some safety, they put long sticks, slates or cloths in manholes so that "traps" could be seen and avoided. But this help, sometimes, can hurt and cripple a passer.

In Uzhgorod, when walking at night in dark alleys, on sidewalks without a light, one needs to be very careful. Manholes without lids get covered by fallen leaves, debris, wooden planks that distract the attention of passers-by. On the roadway, this problem also exists, but headlights help to avoid open manholes. Almost always, manholes become dump sites. The vicious circle of problems in Uzhgorod, where there is no light, trash bins and covers on manholes. But now we are talking about the last one.

Lids are expensive, and the city can not replace them immediately after the theft. This "business", in addition to financial loss to the state, sometimes constitutes deadly threat to citizens. 

This problem concerns other cities of Ukraine too. Media and bloggers regularly discuss this issue on Internet resources with the hope that the authorities will take some measures.

Numerous regular comments constantly remind of this relevant issue. Here is a selection of some of the tips from all over Ukraine: "There should be police activity on this issue as well as cooperation with scrap metal collection points. They should not take manhole covers or report attempts to sell them" – a resident of Lviv writes.  

A resident of Kyiv wrote: "They need to ban scrap metal collection points all together, and therefore this is the matter of the legislature."

"Thieves do not eat covers, do they? They bring them to the collection points. If the police organized an adequate control over such points, they could have easily dealt with this problem. For example, to imprison those who accept manhole covers at such collection points. Then this shameful crime would quickly be eliminated"- bloggers sum up.
