Yanukovych has signed the law on biometric passports

Law "On the unified state register of population", which involves the introduction of electronic passports for Ukrainians and caused a lot of controversy, has been signed by the head of state.

The President Viktor Yanukovych signed the law "On the unified state register of population", which provides for the introduction of biometric passports in Ukraine.
The signing of the Law № 5492-VI was announced by the press service of the head of state on November 29.
Earlier, the president vetoed the law and returned it to the Parliament with his amendments. The deputies agreed with the proposals of the President and at the meeting on November 20 supported the updated bill (243 deputies out of the 335 that were registered in the hall voted "for").
The amendments, inter alia, provide for the right to opt out of receiving biometric passports and entering personal information in contactless electronic media because of religious beliefs.
However, the project continues to generate criticism. Thus, recently the head of the State Service for Promotion of Entrepreneurship Mykhailo Brodsky urged the president to veto the law since its coming into force will result in the 6 billion hrynias loss in the budget.
In particular, he said, the adopted version of the law will allow to concentrate money in the hands of certain stakeholders (meaning the monopoly concern YEDAPS), while the budget will lose significant revenue, which will negatively affect the economic development of the state.
According to the law, the passport of the citizen of Ukraine will be made in the form of a card containing contactless electronic medium of biometric information. The passport will include the following information: the country, document title, the bearer’s first and last names, sex, nationality, date of birth, the unique entry number in the register, number of the document, the expiry date of the document, date of issuance of the document, the issuing authority, place of birth, photograph and signature of the person.
