Today, the international delegation consisting of a representative of the city government of Michalovce, Honorary citizen of Uzhgorod Gabriel Doric and European Commission Commissioner Lukas Vorel came to the Uzhgorod City Council for the working meeting on obtaining the status "European Sports City-2020".

Michalovce, that applied for participation in the competition, already received the status of "European Sports City-2019" in December 2018. Slovakian representatives were recommended to get one of the twin cities involved, they chose Uzhgorod and will support it in the application for this status in 2020. The final decision will be made by the Association of European Sports Cities after applying for and completing several stages of the competition.

During the meeting, it was noted that Uzhgorod in recent years has hosted many sporting events at national and even international levels, has a positive experience in organizing and conducting large-scale competitions with a large number of participants. The infrastructure, of course, needs to be improved, but there is also a progress in this area.

The technical and training facilities are being modernized, in particular, Uzhgorod Children’s and Youth Sport School No. 1 last year received UAH 355 thousand for this, and more than UAH 188 thousand was spent for the purchase of sports equipment.

The participants of the meeting discussed the working plan of the relevant commission, the preparation of documents, the following stages of the contest for Uzhgorod to receive the status "European Sports City-2019".

Members of the delegation inspected several sports facilities in Uzhgorod: visited the sports complex "Yunist" and the stadium "Avtomobilist", the secondary school No.12, where a playground for sports was arranged and also a new playground with artificial turf is being built.
