Will Transcarpathia have wine this year? 2020 was the worst year for winemaking

Transcarpathian winemakers say that 2020 was probably the worst year for viticulture and winemaking. Neither weather conditions nor other factors have been favourable.

In particular, many festivals, where most of private winemakers sell their products, have been canceled due to quarantine. Large enterprises were also affected. The winery Chateau Chizay (Beregovo) also says that this year’s season for winemakers is one of the worst in decades. The cause is late severe frosts, which struck in April during the development of the vines. And in summer the vines were affected by cold and moisture. By the way, the record harvest of grapes in Transcarpathia was in 2018 – in quantity and quality.
Small entrepreneurs are also reporting this year’s crop failure. In particular, in the wine cellars of the Ursta family in the village of Bene in Beregovo district (pictured). They expect to make only 30 thousand liters of wine, while in previous years they could make up to 50 thousand liters. Winemakers in Uzhgorod and Mukachevo districts say they have lost up to a third of their harvest in some plots.
