As uzhgorod.in learned from its own sources, several main streets in Chop (including Turyanytsya, 2) for two days have been without water supply. Centralized water supply was cut off (due to repair work on the aforementioned street), and the vast majority of wells are empty. Residents complain: no water, no comfort…
Meanwhile, the department of internal policy of Chop City Council sent a report about the meeting on the status of water supply in the city and measures to improve drinking water quality held today, November 21, in the city council.
It was attended by Deputy Mayors, the Head of the separated subdivision "Uzhgorod water supply distance" of the "Lviv Railway", heads of departments and offices, members of the Committee on Housing, Construction and Communications, the director of the Housing Office "Tisa", Chop residents.
At the meeting, it was announced that the pumping station on the Latorica river was built in the early twentieth century to provide water for locomotives at the Chop station. In the late 1940s, and later in 1976, they installed additional filters and began to supply water to the city. Since the construction of the system, only routine maintenance has been performed. Today, water is supplied to Chop by the SS "Uzhgorod water supply distance of the "Lviv Railway".
According to the Mayor of Chop Halyna Tsar, the city historically has been closely connected with the railway, and it is totally dependent on this structure for water supply.
The director of the SS "Uzhgorod water supply distance of the "Lviv Railway" Miroslav Sura said that with the existing technical equipment of the pumping station they can not say with absolute certainty that such a state of emergency would not happen again. The construction of a new reservoir, which would significantly improve the situation, costs millions. The railway does not have such funds, so for now they have to do with the existing equipment.
Also at the meeting they raised the issue of tariffs for water supply. In Chop, they are the lowest in Ukraine! Accordingly, the costs incurred by the railway are not included in the tariffs. Under these conditions, any upgrades is out of the question. Also, tariffs can be raised only at the state level and they have not obtained the approval for that.
At the end of the meeting, Halyna Tsar again asked residents to understand the situation.
And those Chop residents, who have been without water for two days now, can only guess when the water supply will be restored…
