Will the pedestrian crossing point on Ukrainian-Romanian border work again?

The pedestrian crossing point "Khyzha – Tarna Mare" on the Ukrainian-Romanian border in Vynogradiv district was operating from 1996 to 2005. The reason for its closure was the destruction of the bridge over the Tur River which forms the border. Resumption of the crossing point operation would significantly revive the economic life of both Ukrainian and Romanian villages adjacent to the border in this area.

– Officially, the checkpoint is not closed completely, it just stopped working, – H. Moskal said during a working trip to the village of Khyzha. – Both Ukrainian and Romanian parties support the restoration of the checkpoint and the border crossing here is theoretically possible not only for pedestrians but also for passenger transport.

The only problem is that Romania, as a member of the EU, may need an authorization from Brussels. Because Romania’s border with Ukraine is an external border of the EU. We planned a meeting with Adrian Shtef – the Chairman of the County Council of Satu Mare (Romania border region, which borders to Vynogradiv district), during which we will discuss all issues. If it is found out that there are little formal obstacles to the resumption of the checkpoint, we will launch it very soon.
