What is worth to recall about Uzhgorod

The publication Europa Center gathered a collection of forgotten monuments in Uzgorod. "In every corner of the city there are many cultural and historical sites that are forgotten, abandoned or simply go unnoticed. However, each of the memorial sites has its own story: sometimes funny, sometimes – instructive, sometimes – very attractive to tourists, visitors, and Uzhgorod residents" – the newspaper writes.

In particular, the monument to the Earth, which decorates a small square near the linguistic gymnasium.

According to historical data, it was erected in 1987 due to the celebration of the Earth Day proclaimed by the UN. The monument "Earth" by sculptor M.Mykhaylyuk and architect V.Lezu is set on the Nezalezhnist embankment.

Another monument, which drew attention of the publication, is the obelisk, located on Egan square. On the monument, there is a bas-relief depicting a German philosopher, economist, sociologist and writer Karl Marx.

"This monument is interesting because previously, it used to bear an image of Edmund Egan, and only after the inclusion of Transcarpathia to the Soviet Union someone thought that it was politically incorrect" – the newspaper writes, describing the role of this figure in the history of Transcarpathia.

However, historical justice has been done, and a monument to Edmund Egan still was set in our land – in Baranyntsi, at the site of the shot that led to the death of the reformer.

One of the monuments that deserve attention and respect, according to the authors of the material, is on one of the busiest thoroughfares of the city – Mynaiska street. A modest monument to Soviet-Czechoslovak friendship stands there.
