Walls of the recently restored cellars of the “Owl’s Nest” are already covered with mold (Photofacts)

It has been exactly 7 months since the inauguration of the complex "Owl’s Nest" or "Bogolvar" on Rakoczy street in Uzhgorod.

It was presented after the restoration during the "Toureurocenter" on September 23, 2016. The reconstruction of the architectural monument took place within the framework of the grant project, together with Poland and Belarus, for the EU funds. During the project, there were some delays and confusions (the case was even considered in the Commercial Court), but in the end, the attractive facility was opened to the public and tourists. Now, it regularly hosts a variety of events – festivals, exhibitions, presentations, lectures, and more.

Even during the discussions and the preparatory work, Uzhgorod residents were asking about the future life and look of the monument of architecture in new capacity. During the opening, many people noted that the historic wine cellars had also undergone significant updates. Some also complained: there is a unique stonework there, and it was covered with plaster and painted over, which dramatically altered the authentic look of this place, and also does not let the stone "breathe." Condensation and water drips from under the layer of plaster were visible already during the first festivals in the basement, in some corners of the room there were even small puddles.

Now in many spots on the cellar walls and ceiling, especially in niches, there is not only condensation, but also signs of mold. In some places mold has already significantly spoilt the look of the walls…

It’s a shame. Especially, taking into account that nearly one million euros was spent for renovation.

It should be noted that the cellars, that in the XVIII century were used to store wine and food, due to the features of the building, are poorly ventilated and not heated. However, these features should probably have been taken into account during the reconstruction work.

This is what journalists were told in July 2016 during the preparation for the opening of the "Bogolvar."

We are waiting for the comments of the experts involved in the project, builders, professionals and local authorities. And, of course, we hope that the problem will not spread further, and the "Owl’s Nest" cellars will not need a new repair.
