Uzhgorod residents ask to recognize street cats as part of the city’s ecosystem – petition

Are stray animals a problem? Definitely, yes. How to deal with it and is it possible to solve this issue completely? On May 27, a petition appeared on the site of the Uzhgorod City Council, in which its author Ruslan Chepiga asks to recognize street cats as part of the city’s ecosystem.

"Taking as an example the practice of the cities of Lviv, Kyiv, Odesa and other European cities, we need to allow cats to live and move freely in basements, attics and other places of their permanent residence, because they perform an extremely important function of natural deratization – killing rodents that are the cause of many infections. At the same time, attention should be paid to the issue of their reproduction, namely the measures for the humane sterilization, vaccination, registration, home improvement and available drinking points", – the text of the petition reads.

Indeed, such practice is in place not only abroad but also in Ukraine. In particular, Kyiv, Odesa, Lviv, Rivne, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipro and a number of other Ukrainian cities have already supported this initiative and began to protect homeless cats.

The author of the petition raises a number of demands to the city authorities, including a ban on animal catching (with the exception of reducing their number by sterilizing and adopting), preventing the isolation of animals indoors (basements, attics, etc.), ensuring sterilization and vaccination of animals.
