Another act of vandalism has been committed in the regional center. In the central cemetery, Kalvaria, unknown persons destroyed about 15-20 tombstones.
It was noticed yesterday, July 28, by relatives of those buried in this cemetery. A company of minors was hanging out near the ruined graves; according to eyewitnesses, they were clearly under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. People called the police, who recorded the destruction and interviewed the teenagers.
Our correspondent visited the cemetary this morning and was horrified – the scale of the devastation is catastrophic. Destroyed tombstones, broken plates and vases, toppled obelisks. There is no point in looking for any ethnic grounds for committing this crime – the burying places of Hungarians, Ukrainians, Russians, and Slovaks were destroyed.
It is hard to imagine the amount of pecuniary damage caused by vandals. The already mentioned relatives of one of the buried persons said that the monument had been installed just four months ago and they had spent more than 25 thousand hryvnias for it.
Will law enforcement officers find those, who committed vandalism at the Kalvaria yesterday? We can only hope. Because impunity leads to lawlessness. And the city authorities will have to consider the circumstances and do something to solve the problem.
Below are some photos of the ruined tombs.
