We already reported how right-wing radicals in Uzhgorod tried to disrupt the rally in support of women’s rights and for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. The incident caused a stormy public reaction, especially in social networks. The reaction of journalist and public figure Volodymyr Feskov published on Facebook is particularly noteworthy.
"I want to appeal to Olena Makara and Yuriy Martsenyshyn
The testimony of one of the participants of the events that occurred during a peaceful assembly. The incident is covered by national media. But I want to talk without emotions. According to the organizers, they notified the city council about the rally in advance. That means that the police should have been notified too, assessed the risks and ensured security at the event. What went wrong? It must be found out. Did the city council employees inform the police in advance? Did local patrol police consider this event as potentially complex and with possible provocations? After all, there should be a public reaction of the city and the police. Statements and actions.
Why is this important? Because peaceful assembly is a unique form of the body of individual human rights, and that is why it is called not just a right, but freedom of peaceful assembly. The Maidan started because of its restriction. It is this freedom that gave birth to the new government and the new police. Ignoring and inaction when this freedom is violated is the test for adequacy of the government and the police. In other words, if some scum disrupt peaceful a assembly, to which the police and the authorities have positive obligations, then there have been no real changes in the country. Consider this rally an indicator of changes in your agencies. Yes, you understand it right. That is why in Kyiv, thousands of law enforcement officers protect the Equality March. Because it is a test, failing which we are condemned by world community and lose their money. For some, it is subventions and grants, for others – new uniforms, logistical support and close cooperation with the police of other countries. By the way, Canadian police, which our police work closely with, would have prevented such a disruption of a peaceful assembly. Just ask them.
As for me, tomorrow I’ll start to write you letters and requests. Uzhgorod can not be held hostage to the group of idiots in tracksuits and inadequate system. Let’s deal with this issue. After all, you too have women in your lives that you respect. Let us do it for them too. I hope you will understand"
