According to the Deputy Mayor of Uzhgorod Oleksandr Bilak, currently there are 13 taxi services in the city. The Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv cited examples from his own experience and from the appeals to the City Council, and from reports in the media and social networks that often cars arrive on call with great delays, many cars are in very poor condition, dirty outside and inside, drivers smoke cigarettes inside, talk impolitely with passengers. Also, taxis often have foreign license plates, although it is strictly prohibited, and a passenger will not be eligible for compensation from the insurance company in case of accident.
"Foreigners, who come to our hotel, after using taxi service, simply refuse to come to our city and to Ukraine again and also discourage their friends and acquaintances" – the manager of the hotel "Praga" Oleksandr Szalai complained.
Representatives of taxi services argued that every driver is a private entrepreneur, who just concludes a contract for the services, and that it is impossible to check all the cars they drive. Similarly, there is no possibility to conduct daily checks of the technical condition of the car and driver’s health condition.
Following the discussion, the Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv instructed the city council to study the experience of Khmelnytsky, Ivano-Frankivsk and other cities, where they adopted decisions that define the rules of taxi transportation in the cities, as well as legal mechanisms and tools to influence the quality of transportation. Also they decided to prepared an appeal to the Parliament requesting to speed up the adoption of the laws that would provide local authorities with such mechanisms.
They also agreed to continue arranging parking areas for taxis, there are 12 locations for them in Uzhgorod.
