Ukraine already has genetically modified food, and this technology should be developed.
This opinion was expressed by the President of Ukrainian Grain Association Volodymyr Klimenko in the broadcast of "Era-FM".
"Today about 70-80 percent of our soybeans and 20-30 per cent of corn is genetically modified. The people should not be afraid: in the United States they consume twice as much of such products and live … I think many people will support me for purely practical reasons: in the U.S. the attitude towards the people is the best in the world and if they do it, then Ukraine should simply repeat their "steps" – he said.
His position was supported by the director of information company "Pro agro" Mylola Vernitsky.
"Two of the world’s largest populous countries – India and China – have allowed GMOs. They have no choice – they need to increase food production. As for pesticides: Ukraine in recent years due to more active use thereof and application of fertilizers and so on has greatly increased the yield of many crops. We have a goal to grow even more, thus we can not do without intensification," – said the expert.
The Cabinet abolished mandatory labeling of foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
