Ukraine should focus on the fight against piracy – U.S. Ambassador

Ukraine in the next few months should focus on protecting intellectual property rights. This will help to increase its competitiveness in foreign markets and facilitate investment flows.

So says the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Jeffrey Payett.

"A very important goal for Ukraine for the next few months is the protection of intellectual property rights, which in turn will open the door for investors, innovations and entrepreneurship. Ukrainian government announced that it was their priority, and the U.S. support it. Now you need to translate good intentions into action," – he said, speaking at the presentation of the annual analytical report of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Payett also stressed that Ukraine needs to strengthen the rule of law and the judicial system as a whole.

"Strengthening of the rule of law will have a positive effect on attracting investments and strengthening competitiveness. Courts should make reliable and consistent decisions, apply the law to all equally, and that will create equal conditions for business and investment flows," – he said.

As you know, the U.S. trade representative in its annual special report put Ukraine on the top of the list of countries that do not provide effective legal protection of intellectual property.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister Kostyantyn Hryshchenko believes that the recognition of Ukraine as one of the major violators of intellectual property rights in the world does not represent the real situation.
