The Senior Specialist of Uzhgorod city and district office of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service in Transcarpathia Lyudmyla Ponomaryova says that the first manifestations of Lyme disease are redness at the spot of tick’s bite, headache, obstinacy of neck muscles, lethargy. If not treated early, the disease can lead to damages to skin, joints, muscles, nervous and cardiovascular systems, and even to disability.
Lyme disease and viral encephalitis most freaquently occur in the region among diseases carried by ticks. Mrs. Lyudmyla says that this year, more than 35 people have appealed to them and two of them are suspected for Lyme disease. They are still conducting necessary researches.
The doctor advised while walking in nature to wear monochromatic light clothing with long sleeves, which fits snugly to the body. After coming home, immediately change and thoroughly inspect your clothes, wash and iron it. If you found a tick on your skin, immediately contact the nearest Emergency room or remove it by yourself: lubricate the tick with oil (but do not let him drown) and slowly pull it out together with the proboscis, using blunt tweezers. Then treat the bite with iodine solution or alcohol. If the proboscis is left inside, remove it with a sterile needle. But it is better to consult a doctor to prevent complications.
Measure body temperature daily within two weeks after the bite. If there is an increase or redness of the skin, seek medical help. Because, the doctor says, the consequences can occur even in a month.
