On August 20, Hungary celebrates the main state holiday – the Day of St. Istvan, the myhungary.net writes. The date is devoted to the first king of the country – Istvan (Stephen), who ascended the throne on August 20, 1000. Istvan I was remembered as a just and wise ruler who did a lot for his people. He laid the foundations of the independent Hungarian state.   The Catholic Church canonized Istvan, after which he became the patron saint of Hungary.

On St. Istvan’s Day, the founding of the Hungarian state is celebrated.

Nowadays, St. Istvan’s Day is celebrated sumptuously throughout the country. However, that was not always the case. For example, during the suppression of the Hungarian uprising in 1848-49, the holiday was banned. Also, it was not celebrated during the period when Hungary was a part of the socialist camp.
