The Vice President of the Hungarian opposition party "Democratic Coalition" (DC) Laszlo Varyu demands from the government to immediately denounce the 1963 agreement, according to which Ukrainian and Russian pensioners receive money from the state, the Radio Liberty reports.
The savings can be spent to improve the lives of Hungarian pensioners – Laszlo Varyu said on Saturday at a press conference in Budapest.
He added that the DC urges the government of Viktor Orban to immediately terminate the agreement with the Russian Federation and Ukraine. According to the Law of 1963, citizens of these countries who live in Hungary, have the same rights and receive the same social security and services as Hungarians who have worked there all their lives.
Laszlo Varyu says that the sum paid to foreign pensioners is over 10 billion forints (about 35 million US dollars) a year, so it can be spent on increasing pensions for Hungarian pensioners.
Every year, the Pension Fund of Ukraine receives from Hungary more than 600 inquiries for the confirmation of pensionable service which is taken into account when calculating the amount of pension. Currently, there are nearly 10,000 people from Ukraine who receive pension in Hungary. Of course, most of them are inhabitants of Transcarpathian region.
According to official statistics, more than 72,000 Hungarian pensioners live below the poverty line – they receive less than 50,000 HUF (160 EUR or 4,600 UAH).
Ukrainians in Hungary sometimes receive pensions of more than 100,000 forints (about 10,000 hryvnia) since they provide documents that make them elligible.
Currently, the Agreement between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the Hungarian People’s Republic on cooperation in the field of social security dd. July 1, 1963 is still in force.
