Polyglot policemen serve in Transcarpathia.
The Main Office of the National Police in Transcarpathian region has formed a list of law enforcement officers who, in case of necessity, will provide qualified assistance in as many as seven languages.
Since Transcarpathia is a multinational region, the knowledge of a foreign language plays an important role for the police officers.
The most commonly used ones in Transcarpathia are English and Hungarian. The percentage of law enforcement officers, who speak these languages, is almost the same – 42% of the total number multilingual policemen.
In addition, police officers living in border areas speak Slovak (5%), Romanian (2%), Polish (2%), Czech (5%) and German (2%).
Despite the fact that at work policemen are obligated to speak Ukrainian language, they sometimes have to speak the language of interlocutors in order to understand and establish contact with the population. Practice shows that it is easier to build trust with a person if you speak their native language.
The number of polyglot policemen is constantly growing, because Transcarpathian law enforcement officers are ready to learn and improve their knowledge in the areas that may be useful to them when performing their duties, – the PR department of Transcarpathian regional police informs.
