Officers of the Main Office of the National Police in Transcarpathian region detained a group of people specializing in thefts from churches. Law enforcers proved their involvement in 14 such cases in 5 districts, notified them that they are suspected, and the court imposed on them a pre-trial restraint.
The police received reports about thefts from churches in different parts of the Transcarpathian region. About ten cases were registered by police departments and offices in Uzhgorod, Perechyn, Svalyava, Beregovo and Mukachevo districts. It took less than a month for law enforcement officers to find the persons involved in the series of crimes. The police detained all three suspects immediately after committing another theft on the territory of Svalyava district.
Law enforcers found out that three residents of Uzhgorod aged 34, 37 and 38 had bought tools and lock picks and started illegal activities. The men would break into churches, took cash and all the valuable things found inside.
After the arrest of the men, the police found a cache with the stolen things. A criminal proceeding over this incident was initiated under Part 5 of Art. 185 of the CCU, that is, theft committed in particularly large size or by an organized group. Such an offense is punishable by imprisonment for a term of seven to twelve years, with the confiscation of property. All three were notified of being suspected.
Uzhgorod inter-district court in the course of a pre-trial investigation imposed on two of them a pre-trial restraint in the form of home arrests, on the organizer – custody.
The police proved the involvement of the organized criminal group in up to 14 thefts in 5 districts.
