Transcarpathian deputies and officials voted against the adoption of law on languages

The Chairman of the Transcarpathian Regional Council Ivan Baloga and the chairman of Uzhgorod District Council, the Chairman of the Regional Association of District Councils, a member of the Presidium of the Ukrainian association of district and regional councils Mikhail Fedinets, on behalf of local authorities appealed to the chairman of Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn with a request not to reconsider the bill № 9037 "On the basis of language policy" at the plenary session of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine – the press service of the regional council informs.

"We, the representatives of local governments of Transcarpathian region, deputies of the regional council, chairmen of district councils, municipal heads of towns of regional importance, appeal to you with a request not to reconsider the bill № 9037 "On the basis of language policy" at the plenary session of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. "The huge public outcry and the incidents that took place during the plenary session on May 24, 2012, showed that once again the language issue becomes a matter of contention in the Ukrainian society.
Experience in Transcarpathia – a multinational region – confirms that the Constitution of Ukraine regulates the inter-ethnic relations and guarantees national communities free command and use of native language. The adoption of this law may lead to destabilization in the country and aggravation of the political situation", – says the telegram.

The message was supported by 61 MPs of the Transcarpathian Regional Council.
