Transcarpathian checkpoints will be renovated for European funds

Last Monday, the renovated part of the checkpoint Uzhgorod – Vysne Nemecke was put into operation in Slovakia.

They increased the number of lanes for passenger cars, arranged passage for pedestrians and cyclists (that will be opened after relevant agreements between Ukraine and Slovakia are signed).   At the checkpoint, they did a major repairs of the administrative building and upgraded the video surveillance system.

Part of the checkpoint on the Ukrainian side must have common infrastructure with the Slovak checkpoint and meet European standards. The European Union allocated almost EUR 7 million for the reconstruction of both sides under the program of border cooperation, of which three million has been used by the Slovak party. Ukraine has not yet used its 4 million because of the political situation and the ongoing restructuring of fiscal services. The reconstruction will begin in 2016.

The reconstruction of the checkpoint is being implemented within the framework of ENPI border cooperation Hungary – Slovakia – Romania – Ukraine for 2007 – 2013. Ukraine under this program has received funds for the reconstruction of three checkpoints: Uzhgorod – Vysne Nemecke (on the Ukrainian-Slovak border), Luzhanka (on the Ukrainian-Hungarian dorder) nad Dyakovo (on the Ukrainian-Romanian border).
