Transcarpathian and Kyiv regions head the top five of ‘the happiest’ regions of the country

Russian colleagues constitute the so-called ‘index of sorrow’ for world countries and regions of the Russian Federation not for the first year. The essence of the index is simple: journalists summarize the inflation unemployment rate – the higher the rates more miserable region of Russia is. The Russian portal also justifies the choice of statistical data needed for the index calculation: American economist Arthur Okun in the 70s of last century found out that unemployment makes people suffer. Inspired by experiences of our neighbors, ‘Komentarii’ have decided to create a similar index for the Ukrainian regions.

* Unemployment rate on the basis of 2011 was calculated as the ratio of unemployed people, registered in the State Service of employment to the average number of working-age population.

Thus, if we take for granted the foregoing statement of Arthur Okun, we can claim with full responsibility that among ‘the most miserable’ cities of Ukraine the top five includes:

Chernihiv and the city of Sevastopol – 11.3

Mykolaiv – 11.2

Crimea – 11.1

Kherson and Lugansk – 11

Zhytomyr Region – 10.9.

At the same time the top five of ‘the happiest’ regions of the country are:

Transcarpathian and Kyiv region – 7.9

Chernivtsi region – 8

Ivano-Frankivsk – 8.4

Vinnichchina – 8.7

Kharkiv and Volyn region – 9.

As a result, it turned out that in the western region of the country, where there are no large industrial enterprises and almost half of the population has moved to earn money to the EU, people mainly feel themselves much better than those in eastern regions
