Do not touch the People’s Square! Appeals to sign the request with the mentioned statement appeared in the group "Uzhgorod" in facebook. All citizens who do not support the project of "arrangement" of the People’s Square are invited to sign an open letter to the government tomorrow, October 16, from 12.30 to 13.30 at the Theater Square.
This quite "revolutionary" project of rearrangement of the People’s Square was published by the architect Vlad Pavley (stating that the project was approved by the "governor" of Transcarpathia and is ready for implementation).
The project led not only to a lively discussion on the Internet, but also faced active resistance of experts and people who care for the architectural face of Uzhgorod. The recognized experts in the field of architecture and arts, members of the regional architectural and artistic and urban planning councils stood against such a change and sent an open letter to the government of Transcarpathia and regional center with a request to stop plans for "improvement" of the heart of "Czech" quarter of Uzhgorod – the People’s Square. The project, in particular, involves not only the construction of fountain, but also pavement of large territory that is now the green zone with stone. As it was already known, the project costs over 20 million hryvnias. As noted in numerous comments of Uzhgorod citizens, the change of the People’s Square does not belong to the most essential needs of city improvement today and the funds could be used much more effectively, for example, for arrangement of squares.
