Today is the 153rd anniversary of the fall of the largest meteorite in Europe

The meteorite appeared over the city of Litovskiy Mikulas, flew eastward over the Slovak cities of Saris, Zemplіn, Presov (Slovakia) and, having covered a distance of more than 200 km, exploded near the village of Knyahynya at an altitude of 40 km.

This meteorite, according to the witnesses of the events, was found by a villager Vasyl Kryvyanyk.  A few days after the fall of the meteorite, he went to mow grass and saw a hole in the meadow, which had not been there before. Having excavated the ground at this spot, he found a large fragment of the meteorite weighing 279 kg 766 g. When it fell, it split into two pieces weighing 141 kg 833 g and 137 kg 933 g.
