Three strains of influenza are predicted in the land: two of the "A" group and one of the "B" group, informed the Head of epidemiological department of Transcarpathian regional sanitary and epidemiological station Svitlana Oberemko. These are completely new for Transcarpathians viruses "Victoria" and "Wisconsin", as well as "California" – swine flu that was spreading in the world three years ago.
"Transcarpathians have the immunity to the California flu. But those who did not have "California" may fall ill. "Wisconsin," like other viruses of the "B" group is not extremely dangerous for the population. But "Victoria" is a brand new strain in Ukraine, and therefore has a high epidemiological potential and Ukrainians are vulnerable to it."
All three types of flu from the East are expected in Transcarpathia in January and February. Now the sharp increase in the incidence of acute respiratory infections is not observed.
"So far there are only typical respiratory virus infections – in this way the body tries to adapt to new weather conditions. Epidemiological threshold is not exceeded: 1200-1400 patients have been registered during a week. Measles outbreak is not anticipated. There is no flu in Ukraine."
Doctors advise to vaccinate especially those at risk to get flu complications, such as HIV-infected patients, patients with diabetes, asthma, diseased kidneys, chronic liver, lung, heart disease and so on. Moreover, says Svitlana Oberemko, all three strains were included in the seasonal flu vaccine and recommended by WHO.
