The emergence of Beregovo district, which was not planned to be formed previously, became a surprise for both the public and the expert community. It seems that by making this administrative unit the Ukrainian government is making the first concessions to Hungary, the website of the city of Uzhgorod notes.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba posted on his social media page three fakes and three truths about Beregovo district of Transcarpathian region:
1. Fake: Ukraine is making Beregovo district to please Hungary.
Truth: Beregovo district has existed for a long time and has the right to continue its existence. At present, only Vynogradiv district will be added to it as part of the reform. The decision was not made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but we support the administrative-territorial reform, which is truly European and progressive.
2. Fake: Kuleba made a commitment to form Beregovo district during his visit to Budapest.
Truth: I did not make any such commitments during my visit to Budapest. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advocates for the protection of the rights of national minorities, but does not negotiate with any country on the establishment of "national" districts. Such negotiations would be contrary to the Constitution, legislation and national interests of Ukraine.
3. Fake: diplomats betrayed Ukrainian interests in relations with Hungary.
Truth: diplomats are working to normalize relations with Hungary, because it is in the strategic interests of Ukraine, in particular the interests of our Euro-Atlantic integration, and Central Europe in general. We at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are looking for compromises in Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, but we will never betray our interests, we will not cross the "red lines" that would harm the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
And finally. My principled position and the official position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
No foreign state has the right to tell Ukraine how to organize communities, districts or regions. Any interference of a foreign state in the internal affairs of Ukraine is absolutely unacceptable.
