An expert compares what is being done with trees in Uzhgorod with using a guillotine to treat a common cold.
Associate Professor of the UzhNU, the Head of the Department of Botany of the Biological Faculty Oleg Kolesnik published his opinion on tree pruning in Uzhgorod backed with photographs.
Here is what he says:
"In recent years, there has been the "epidemic" of tree crown reduction pruning in our city. It was declared the sole and infallible method of tree care. They cut all trees, old and young. They do not mind neither the aesthetic appeal, nor the feasibility, nor the biological properties of trees. And as usual, the debates between supporters and opponents ensue in the media. Of course, this discussion is not productive. It’s like the debate on the guillotine as the only possible treatment of a cold."
Oleg Kolesnik demonstrates an example of how it is done in Uzhgorod.
"In the lane at A. Voloshin st., 32, a huge old ailanto hangs above the stairs, where thousands of students and tourists walk every day. Large branches have already fallen from that tree and it’s a miracle that no one has been hurt. Also, the root system of the tree is destroying the retaining wall and any minute the tree can fall on the historic building where the UzhNU Faculty of Biology is located.
The situation, as we can see, really requires immediate resolution. And what did our utilities do? They came, cut down a dried nut tree (it should have been done long ago, they had it right) and… pruned young ailantos, while leaving the dangerous tree. That is, instead of cutting a large dangerous tree and leaving young ones, they disfigured the young trees, leaving the dangerous one.
And there are many more similar examples. Draw your own conclusions," – the scientist said.
And he adds rather alarming words. "But there are rumors that the ax is already hanging over the Linden Alley. I hope that this is not true", – Oleg Kolesnik says.
