The monument to the last Transcarpathian opryshok Ilko Lepej was damaged by vandals. This was reported on social networks.
Note: In the mid-1930s, the name of the last opryshok of Verkhovyna Ilko Lepej was all over the pages of the local and Czechoslovak press. More than a hundred gendarmes were sent to catch him. And yet he managed to escape the law for a long time…
On August 14, 1935, Czech gendarmes finally found his hideaway near the village of Repynne, where he was hiding with his partner Yuriy Klevets, and surrounded them. During the chase, Yuriy Klevets managed to get out, and Ilko Lepej was shot dead. Two days later, he was buried at the cemetery in Volove (now Mizhzhirya).
But we still do not know all the truth about this prisoner of the forest. Unfortunately, even his descendants do not know the exact place of his burial, the Novyny Zakarpattya informed.
