The comment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on the visit of Foreign Minister of Hungary to Transcarpathian region of Ukraine was posted on the official website of the Ministry:
"Ignoring the relevant recommendations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, on July 16, 2019 visited the city of Beregovo of Transcarpathian region of Ukraine, where he took part in a number of public events.
The official note by the Hungarian Embassy in Ukraine states that P.Szijjarto made this visit at the invitation of the People’s Deputy of Ukraine V. Brenzovych, who is a candidate for people’s deputies at the extraordinary elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
At the same time, paragraph 1 of Part one of Article 74 of the Law of Ukraine "On elections of people’s deputies of Ukraine" stipulates that foreigners and stateless persons are not allowed to participate in election campaigning, including public events in support or with the support of a party being a subject of the election or a candidate for deputy.
In turn, article 41 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations stipulates that all persons enjoying diplomatic privileges and immunities are obliged to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving state. They are also required not to interfere in the internal affairs of that state.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will contact the competent authorities of Ukraine with a request to give a legal assessment of the situation.
