The Ministry of Culture was informed on the situation with the historical basements discovered in Uzhgorod

People’s Deputy of Ukraine Robert Horvat sent an appeal to the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Yevhen Nyshchuk on the situation with the historical basements discovered in Uzhgorod during the construction works at Poshtova Square, 4a.

According to the deputy, the construction works are being carried out in the historical part of the city and can not begin without the appropriate approval of the Ministry of Culture. However, even if they have such approval, if the excavation reveals a finding of archaeological or historical nature, the work performer is obliged to stop the work and within 24 hours to notify the relevant guardian of the cultural heritage. "Therefore, I asked the Minister Nyshchuk to take measures and stop any work on the construction site at Poshtova Square, 4a in Uzhgorod.

In addition, I am waiting for information on the expert opinion following the scientific archaeological examination. I’m also interested if the Ministry of Culture approved the project for this construction in the very beginning," – Horvat said.

Recall that on Monday, July 1, during the construction work on Poshtova Square in Uzhgorod, the workers came upon the entrance to old basements under the central part of the city. Experts, who were able to see the discovery, suggest that the cellars can be dated back to the XVIII century. On Monday, Robert Horvat and Volodymyr Chubirko visited the construction site where the chief architect of Uzhgorod, Oleg Borshovsky, assured that the work on the site would be suspended. At the same time, at the end of the day it turned out that for unknown reasons the entrance to the cellars was covered with earth and rubble.
