Today, March 19, in Uzhgorod, near the "Owl Nest", there was the opening of the memorial to the victims of the Hungarian revolution of 1956, the galagov.tv reports.
According to the sources, Transcarpathians learned about the revolution in Budapest from the Hungarian edition of the "Voice of America". After that, national oriented Hungarian youth of the region actively expressed their solidarity with their brothers in Hungary. When convoys of Soviet military vehicles were moving toward Hungary through the region, in major cities and district centers – Uzhgorod, Beregovo, Vynogradiv – groups of the intelligentsia and students began protesting against the aggression of Soviet troops, informing the public about the developments in Hungary and the demands of the revolutionaries.
Then, there were political repressions that lasted until the end of 1959 and at least 35,000 citizens were accused of political "crimes".
Hundreds, thousands of people arrested in Hungary were taken to Uzhgorod prison, from where many of them after the verdicts were sent to the gulag camps to serve their sentences. Transcarpathian protesters were treated the same. Only strong protests by the international community saved many Transcarpathian young people, students from prosecution and sentences in the Siberian camps.
