The mayor’s office promised: we will not float (commentary)

Recently, Lutsk was "floating". Transport stopped, basements of residential buildings, city hospitals were flooded. Lutsk Mayor Mykola Romaniuk said that storm drains were made a long time and could not withstand heavy rains. This was the probable cause of the flood.

We asked the head of the landscaping department of Uzhgorod City Council Oleksandra Turyanchyk if Uzhgorod is ready to emergencies.

"Employees of the CP KSHEP pursuant to the agreement for the maintenance of the city roads are cleaning storm grates and siphons off of silt, – Oleksandra Turyanchyk says. – The city housing offices together with other structures clean water protection area off of ​​trees and shrubs that prevent the passage of flood waters. In case of excessive accumulation, the water will be drained through the drainage channel in the Bozdosh park."

According to Ms. Oleksandra, in Uzhgorod, the situation similar to the Lutsk one can arise only under emergencies conditions: "In our city, several streets are equipped with new manual drainage system. Water flowing to the sewer, goes directly into the river. Another – general system – is somewhat outdated and during heavy rains can malfunction. But we clean it regularly, so the water can rise above the norm, only during really abnormal rains."
