The Hungarian community appealed to the court over compliance with constitutional rights

People’s Deputy, the Chairman of the Hungarian Culture Society of Transcarpathia Vasyl Brenzovych brought a lawsuit against the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, the Mukachevo.net reported.

The reason of the suit is the CEC’s refusal to form a Hungarian constituency in Transcarpathia for the next parliamentary elections.

Brenzovych cites Article 18 of the Law on the Elections of People’s Deputies, which concerns the interests of national minorities, which should be taken into account when forming electoral constituencies.

– During the 2014 parliamentary elections, the KMKSZ also appealed to the Central Election Commission of Ukraine to create a separate constituency for Hungarians living in the same region, but the request was rejected, and most of the Hungarian population was divided into three constituencies. In addition, contrary to electoral law, Beregovo district, where the largest share of Hungarian minority voters reside, was divided between several constituencies, – Vasyl Brenzovych said.

According to People’s Deputy, the KMKSZ has appealed to the CEC several times, but they said that for various reasons they can not determine where exactly the Hungarians live in Transcarpathia and therefore they can not form a separate Hungarian constituency. So the request was rejected. It was this refusal that became the reason for the present lawsuit.
