The main arena of Transcarpathia turns 60. This was reported to the Novyny Zakarpattya by the former director of the "Avangard" Igor Rusanov.
After the war, many constructions were started in Uzhgorod, the urbanization began, so the need for a large stadium appeared. In the early 50s, the construction of a new sports complex of impressive proportions designed by architect Yevhen Vals began. On May 3, 1953, Uzhgorod residents witnessed the inauguration of the sports complex. On the territory of 500 sq. m., there were 4 football fields, a basketball and three volleyball courts, a special area for playing skittles and tennis courts with 6 fields were equipped.
Due to its versatility, Uzhgorod stadium became a famous track and field center. It was here where in 1962, high jumper Valery Brumel set a European record, beating 2,20 m. Honored Masters of Sports football players Jozsef Szabo, Vasyl Turyanchyk, Fedir Medvid, runners – Anatoly Redko, Oleksandr Velichko made their first steps in big sport at the "Avangard".
