The Head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Oleksandr Ledyda acknowledged that he is "not a specialist in the field of cultural heritage" and is still determined to reconstruct Narodna Square.
uzhgorod.in asked at today’s press conference, whether the "governor" had abandoned the project after the appeal of the Urban Planning Council members, architects and artists regarding the inacceptability of distortion of the integral Halahov complex as well as after public hearings at which experts had strongly opposed the proposed project.
Oleksandr Ledyda replied: "I’m not an expert on cultural heritage. But can a football field or lawn in front of the regional administration be considered a cultural heritage?… There are specialists who can answer. You see if you want to do something good for someone, there are many people who do not like it. But I have different principles. I have made a decision. Yes, there will be the expert council, and another one, and another, and another … But this situation with this field does not suit me."
Oleksandr Ledyda argued that the square should be used by everyone – both city residents and guests of Uzhgorod – and apparently he still wishes the square to be paved for he wants that "people could relax, sit somewhere …"
Recall, that experts in the field of conservation of the architectural and cultural heritage clearly opposed the reconstruction of the Narodna Square project that would lead to the destruction of the integral architectural complex of the whole "Czech district" of the city, which is extremely valuable from architectural point of view.
However, the governor, though admits his incompetence in this matter, nevertheless persists. And if previously he talked about the reconstruction of the Narodna Square at the expense of the state budget, now he says that it will be paid for out of the regional budget.
