A quarter-century – this is how long diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Japan have been existing. Also 2017 is the Year of Japan in Ukraine. On this occasion, as we have mentioned, the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine launched a campaign, during which more than 2,000 sakura trees – the symbol of Japan – will be planted in many cities of our country. Uzhgorod is one of those cities.
Today, in the regional center of Transcarpathia, on Svoboda Avenue, the Deputy Head of the Mission, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine Michio Harada, Uzhgorod Mayor Bohdan Andriyiv, the Deputy Mayor Oleksandr Bilak and the manager of the executive committee of Uzhgorod city council Olena Makara planted the first 10 of the 30 sakuras donated by the Embassy of Japan to our city. Another 20 will be planted in autumn.
Mr. Michio Harada, who visited Uzhgorod for the first time, said that he was extremely impressed with the city and the sakuras growing here. "Sakuras, that we have brought to Ukraine, are very similar to those we see in Japan – the diplomat said. – Uzhgorod residents must be very happy having such wonderful sakuras. Now I feel much closer to Uzhgorod, although I’m here for the first time, I want to come to your beautiful city again. Maybe, next year."
In addition, two dozen sakuras were planted on Pravoslavna embankment near the monument to police officers killed in the line of duty.
