The fire blocked the exit – she got the children out through the window. How 11-year-old Sonya in Rakhiv district saved her family in a fire

A terrible tragedy could have happened in the village of Kobyletska Polyana in Rakhiv district of Transcarpathia. But a little girl intervened and saved other children, later her neighbors and firemen came to help her, – the Office of the State Emergencies Service of Ukraine in Transcarpathian region informed.

Six people were rescued in the fire that occurred in a residential house in the village of Kobyletska Polyana of Rakhiv district on the night of November 25th. The tragedy was avoided thanks to the prompt and coordinated actions of the local residents and the 11-year-old daughter of the house owners.

At the time of the fire, there were five children and their sick relative in the house. The parents had gone to the district center on business matters.

In the evening, when the children were already going to bed, the eldest of the children, 11-year-old Sonya smelled smoke coming from the adjacent room. When she opened the door, she realized that their wooden house was burning.   Realizing that the fire had already blocked the way to the exit from the house, Sonya immediately began to evacuate her brothers and sisters through the window.

When all the children, the youngest one of whom was just two years old, were safe, the girl herself got out of the house. By that time, fellow villagers had already noticed the fire: some called the rescuers, while others rushed to help the child. Sonya told neighbors that their relative was still inside the house.

Local residents Bogdan Lybavka and Ivan Tabaka rushed to rescue him. The men quickly entered the house, found him and took him out. Then Ivan Tabaka drove the children to local district hospital in his car. Fortunately, the children did not need medical care, and stayed under the supervision of doctors until the arrival of their parents.

The fire was eliminated by the firefighters of the state fire and rescue post of the village of Velyky Bychkiv and the local fire brigade of this settlement. Also, local residents helped them.

The cause of the fire is to be established by the investigation. The fire destroyed the roof and wooden walls over the area of ​​66 m2.
