This is one of the most powerful and famous meteor showers, which occurs when the Earth enters the dust trail of the Swift-Tuttle comet. According to the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, supervisor of the space observatory of UzhNU Vitaliy Yepishev, fragments of rock from its core, entering the Earth’s atmosphere, burst in it like stars. Most flashes (known as "shooting stars") are caused by meteoroids with the size of a grain of sand.
The Perseids meteor shower occurs every year. There is even a saying "stars fall in August." It is a pity that now these phenomena are hardly studied in Ukraine, Mr Yepishev says.
According to new projections, this year’s meteor shower should reach its maximum activity on August 13 in the last hours before dawn, at about 4:00 am. This year’s showers will not be particularly heavy – astronomers expect about a hundred meteors falling every hour. For comparison, two years ago the frequency of the Perseids falling was 124 "shooting stars" per hour, and in 2011 another meteor shower of the Draconids counted 800 "shooting stars" per hour.
Mr. Yepishev says that the best place and time to watch the meteor shower is in the mountains in the second half of the night.
