Soviet art on the streets of Uzhgorod. Part 2

Monumental art of the Soviet period still lives in Transcarpathia, particularly in Uzhgorod. Not long ago we published the first collection of photographs of stained glass, bas relief, sgraffito, tapestries and mosaics that are "scattered" on the streets of Uzhgorod.

Now we present a second series of Soviet art works.Some are still pleasing to the eye, while others, unfortunately, dishearten with their condition. There is also a legacy that is deliberately… hidden from Uzhgorod residents.

In the heart of the city, on ​​Sandor Petofi square, the poster "Smerichka" covers a quite massive and valuable in terms of performance bas relief.

In the building of the school number 9 (now the Economic Lyceum), on the same square, on the ground floor, a mosaic with students catches the eye.

On Poshtova Square, on top of the Uzhgorod post office building, it’s hard not to notice another very expressive bas relief.

And on the abandoned Uzhgorod children (Small Transcarpathian) railway, which was opened in 1947 and now, unfortunately, is out of operation, there is a sgraffito.

The building of the kindergarten number 15, which was built back in 1963 (Lesya Ukrainka st.) is adorned with a sgraffito with mosaic elements.

We have also found many examples of Soviet art in the leading educational institution – the central building of Uzhgorod National University.

On the ground floor, there is a stained glass, which a few take notice of. It is not surprising, since it is (partly) hidden behind "shops" with coffee and baguettes.

Stained glass depicting birds can be noticed when walking upstairs from the first to the second floor.

On the 2nd and the 3rd floors of the UzhNU central building, visitors are welcomed by three paintings over the whole wall, which were likely drawn by the students themselves (some of them are incomplete and drawn incorrectly). Once, they say, there was another painting there, but now it is covered.

Last time we missed a couple of mosaics on the house near the 16-storeyed buiding – here they are.

Accidentally we stumbled upon a decayed, but still "live" sgraffito on the building of the utility "Uzhgorodshchyna", located at Stantsiyna street, 56.

We finish our journey and dive into the Soviet art with a barely noticeable, almost erased by time – washed away by rain and scorched by the sun – painting on one of the houses on Tolstoy street.

The search for the remnants of Soviet art continues…
