“Show us the project!” – Uzhgorod residents are concerned about plans for reconstruction of the Puppet Theater

The concern about the rumored plans for reconstruction of the architectural monument of 1906, the first theater of the city, and now the building of the Regional Puppet Theater "Bavka" on Teatralna Square was expressed in facebook by the user Anonymus Ungvarsky.

The plans about the "Bavka" have been being discussed for quite a while – the theater was even closed for emergency repairs. Now they are saying that the reconstruction (this time it’s not repairs!) may be performed according to a modern and "fairly original" project, which allegedly even provides for additional buildings. This, of course, is unacceptable for the building in the center of Uzhgorod and architectural monument, because it will destroy its identity.

Also our own sources reported that the project was allegedly approved by the "Governor" Oleksandr Ledyda and it really involves more than appropriate interventions in the building. But it is unknown whether any competition of projects was held, what proposals were presented and how the one, according to which they now want to reconstruct the theater, was selected. Meanwhile, concerned citizens prepare requests for information about the Puppet Theater. And they call the rest of Uzhgorod residents to participate in this process – the text of the document is posted on the Internet, suggestions are welcomed. Indeed, despite the fact that such important for the historical center plans and projects must be accessible to and discussed with the public, the city government do not consider it necessary to do so. Well, we must make them… And also we must remind them that all the actions concerning historically and architecturally valuable buildings should take place according to the procedure – from the competition for the project to its public discussion and compliance with methods of works that can be performed only by companies with a special license and so on.
