Scandalous education law – behind the closed door

Foreign ministers and education ministers of Ukraine and Hungary met today at one of the resorts of Transcarpathia in the village of Nyzhnye Solotvyno, the Ukrinform reported.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Hungary Pavlo Klimkin and Peter Szijjarto, as well as the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Lilia Grinevich and the Minister of Human Resources of Hungary Miklos Kasler will discuss the language article of the new law on education. The meeting is being held behind the closed door. After its finished, the officials will talk to the press.

Earlier, in Kyiv, Lilia Grinevich met with representatives of the Hungarian minority and discussed the articles of the new law with them. Until then, the Hungarian minority had refused to participate in the discussion of this law.

On March 20, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto announced their intention to block the participation of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in the NATO Summit, which will take place in Brussels in July 2018.

As you know, the new Ukrainian law on education came into force on September 28, 2017. Its provision regarding the state language of education has been criticized in some circles in Ukraine and abroad, in particular in Hungary.

The transitional provisions of the law provide for a gradual increase in the number of subjects taught in the Ukrainian language. Budapest is regarding it as violation of the rights of the Hungarian minority. Kyiv denies these allegations.
