The beautiful sakura tree, loved by townspeople and guests of the city, which was growing on Druzhba Narodiv Square near the bus stop and was the subject of many photos, is gone.
Today, the tree, which, apparently, was planted during the "Czech period" and which therefore was one of the oldest sakuras in the city, was cut down.
Social networks reacted to this. The photo taken by a city resident was posted in the group "Uzhgorod" on facebook by Vitaliy Glagola. In the comments section, people are outraged and call it barbaric.
Uzhgorod.in aksed the city authorities to comment on it. They said that on the basis of the inspection report, a warrant for the removal of a dry tree was issued and approved by biologists, and the tree was cut down in accordance with it. They said that the sakura had dried up and ceased to bloom. By the way, several more Japanese cherry trees in the "Czech quarter", in particular, on Bozhenko street, are subject to removal. The plants are supposed to be replaced with young saplings of sakura.
The City Council inform that it is planned to plant more than a hundred sakuras in the city center.
Here is how the tree looked like on September 13, during the drawing up of the report.
