By 2015, foreigners will be able to enter into Russia only if they have passport and a medical insurance.
This was said on Wednesday in this year’s final meeting of the State Border Committee of Russia.
According to a source in the Commission, at the meeting they raised the issue of mandatory health insurance for people who come to Russia without visas.
Russia has visa-free travel agreements with 37 countries, mainly – states of the CIS and Central Asia.
As the source explained to the Kommersant, people from these often economically disadvantaged countries are carriers of various infectious diseases (tuberculosis, HIV, etc.).
In addition, many of them, using the fact that Russian doctors have no right to refuse to provide emergency care, go to Russia to get free treatment in case of complicated pregnancies and the need for complex operations.
According to members of the commission, said the source, the introduction of medical insurance may remedy the situation. However, this measure can be effective only after development of a system of medical insurance policies.
