Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto pointed out the Venice Commission’s conclusion regarding the law on Ukrainian language and called on the President of Ukraine to fulfill the relevant obligations
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry stated that the restoration of the rights of the Transcarpathian Hungarians is a condition for the unblocking of the accession of Ukraine to NATO by Budapest. This was reported by the press service of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.
“As soon as the Transcarpathian Hungarians regain their lost rights, Hungary will support the process of Ukraine’s integration into NATO. Not before that,” – the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said.
He also drew attention to the opinion of the Venice Commission on the law on Ukrainian language, which believes that its provisions deprive national communities of their acquired rights to use their mother tongue and also violate international law.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry hopes that President Volodymyr Zelensky will take into account the rights of national minorities in Ukraine and fulfill Ukraine’s obligations.
At the same time, it is noted that the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe has criticized Ukraine’s "language law", stating that it does not strike a balance between the Ukrainian language and the languages of national minorities.
