Residents of the “Hungarian” districts of Transcarpathia cannot watch Ukrainian TV channels

In May 2018, the Society of Hungarian Culture of Transcarpathia acquired 50 percent of the shares of the Danio Television and Radio Company (21st Channel, Uzhgorod) and established a television channel, which uses the broadcasting license together with the owner of the second half of the shares. It is a new TV channel with 12 hours of digital broadcasting per day. Under current legislation, 25 percent of the broadcast in our region may be in the languages of national minorities. Therefore, the new channel has in its part of airtime 6 hours of programs in Hungarian and 6 hours of programs in Ukrainian.

During the interview with the head of the new channel Zoltan Kulin, Oleksandr Hereshko (the author of the interview) pointed out the following:

"The 21st Channel uses the DVB-T2 digital broadcasting. As you know, the monopoly provider of such broadcasts in Ukraine is the Zeonbud company. For unknown reason, during the development of its network in Transcarpathia, they did not install television towers in Beregovo and Vynogradiv districts. Now, it’s impossible to watch here not just the Hungarian 21 channels, but also all the other 30 Ukrainian TV channels. In other words, the districts densely populated by the Hungarians are not covered with Ukrainian TV broadcasting. Zoltan Kulin asks: how can Hungarians learn the Ukrainian language if they have been living in a foreign information space since the termination of analogue broadcasting?

Mr. Zoltan wrote a letter to the regulator, the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting. A letter to the head of the government Volodymyr Groysman is also being prepared. Transcarpathians ask to install additional television towers and give the districts access to Ukrainian television.

And for now, the 21st Channel programs in those districts, as well as throughout the region, can be watched online, on the YouTube channel, on Facebook and on cable television networks."
