Uzhgorod city government announced the intention to reconstruct the Shvabska Street in the regional center year and a half ago. In February 2011, Viktor Pogorelov emphasized that ‘the reconstruction of Shvabska Street is one of the most serious cases in the city in 2011’. At the same time it was announced that the total cost of works – together with the replacement of road coverage, sidewalks, and communications – would reach 8 million hryvnia. However, 2011 has passed and ‘one of the most serious cases’ is not done yet.
One year later, the mayor returned to Shvabska Street theme. The head of the regional center said at a press conference that the movement along the street will be one-way and once again he declared its intention about the complete replacement of green space, parking spaces arrangement and reconstruction of sewage systems. The beginning of the work was planned for April.
However, another 4 months from this year’s statement of Viktor Pogorelov but nothing was done so far. They already received money. Besides, the project and the plan of reconstruction have already appeared on the Uzhgorod City Council official website.
However, despite the resolved already financial issues, the reconstruction of the street has not started yet. According to the Spokesperson of Uzhorod mayor Alla Hayatova, none of the local authorities will comment on this issue currently.
We can only hope that Shvabska Street reconstruction will not be postponed traditionally until the next February. After all the street, which connects the Petefi Square with Cyril and Methodius Square, is one of the main traffic arteries of the city. Currently, the road in the state of emergency and it is really dangerous. There are no figured elements on the sidewalks, lighting and parking – too. Streets still more look like Shanghai lane rather than one of the central European city roads.
