The highest mountain electric fence in Ukraine is now located on the Shumneska meadow in Rakhiv district of Transcarpathian region – about 1,300 meters above sea level.
It was installed this July by WWF-Ukraine experts and now it will protect the flock of the shepherd Vasyl Mukhanyuk. Together with other shepherds, he takes care of three hundred sheep, and he has a lot of work to do: grazing and milking every day, and then making cheese.
To protect his animals, Mr. Vasyl keeps alabai herding dogs that are as big as wolves. But, despite the fearlessness of his alabais, wolves often managed to take a sheep or two. Now, thanks to the fence, predators will have to look for food in the woods.
An electric fence strikes the predators with a low-voltage electric shock that does not injure them, but leaves unpleasant memories.
The electric fence for Vasyl Mukhanyuk was purchased and installed within the framework of the projects “Coexistence for Preservation” and “Life for the Big Predators of Europe”, with the financial support of the European Union and WWF Polska.
